
Julie London (nee Peck, September 26, 1926 - October 18th 1999) is an American actress and singer who spanned over 40 years. London was a torch singer who was known for her soft, smooth voice. She recorded more than 30 albums of jazz and pop classics from 1955 to 1969. Inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 was her recording of "Cry Me a River" which she had included on her debut album. London was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for her role in the role of Dixie McCall, a nurse on the television show Emergency! London was born in Santa Rosa to vaudevillian parents. Her first professional job was as an actress while she was employed as an elevator operator in downtown Los Angeles. London's 35 year acting career began in the film industry in 1944. It featured parts as the female lead in several westerns. In the late 1950s, she signed a recording deal with Liberty Records, marking the beginning of her professional career. The final album of her studio was released in the year 1969. She continued her success in the role of the female main character of Dixie McCall on the television show Emergency! (1972-1979) in which she was a co-star with Bobby Troup. The show was produced by her ex-husband Jack Webb.
